Bertrand Mao 毛戎

毛戎，一九三二年出生江苏省，六十多年来习画作画不缀。绘画题材多山水、花卉，用中国传统笔、墨在宣纸上传以淡彩。如同许多传统的文人画家一样，毛氏曾在政府任职，仅于间暇时间从事书画。一九六五年于乔治城法学院毕业后，毛氏曾任中华民国驻华盛顿大使馆文化组组长，行政院教育部高教司司长。一九九零年退休后，毛氏重新以其对书画的爱好，薪火相传，再创一番新的事业。对毛氏来说，中国书画同源，属共生的艺术形式。他说：

中国书法不仅是优美的手迹，它更赋有文化、诗意、音律，就像幅美丽的图画；同时极少例外的，一个好画家必然也是个好书法家。甚至可以这么说：中国画是用笔写出来的，而中国书法是用笔画出来的。

目前，毛戎在马里兰大学、私立美国大学退休进修中心教学，是马里兰州洛克维尔市大都会视觉艺术中心的驻场艺术家。其足迹遍布大华盛顿地区各个大学、图书馆、美术馆、以及政府机构，在那里从事书画演讲、教学、与示范。毛氏的作品曾在美国、台湾、印度、中国、与苏俄各地以个展或联展方式展出。他长住洛克维尔市已逾二十五年。

Bertrand Mao was born in Jiangsu Province in 1932 and has practiced Chinese painting and calligraphy for more than sixty years. He specializes in landscapes, flower subjects, and calligraphy, using traditional Chinese brush, ink, and light pigments on rice paper. Much like traditional literati painters of the past, Mao was a government official by profession and a painter-calligrapher only in his spare time. A graduate of Georgetown Law School (1965), Mao served as cultural counselor for the Republic of China Embassy in Washington, D.C., and later as director of the Department of Higher Education within the Ministry of Education in Taipei, Taiwan.

After retiring in the 1990s, Bertrand Mao turned his lifelong passion into a career teaching the techniques of Chinese calligraphy and ink-brush painting. For Mao, Chinese painting and calligraphy work with each other as twin art forms:

…calligraphy is not just fancy handwriting. It’s cultural, poetic, musical a beautiful form of art, like painting. It is almost without exception that a good Chinese painter is also a good calligrapher. It can be said that Chinese painting is written with a brush while Chinese calligraphy is drawn as a picture.

Mao is currently a faculty member at University of Maryland University College, at the Institute for Learning in Retirement at American University, and at the Metropolitan Center for the Visual Arts in Rockville, Maryland. He has demonstrated and lectured widely at universities, libraries, art museums, and government institutions in the greater Washington, D.C. area and exhibited his artwork in solo and group exhibitions in the United States, Taiwan, India, China, and Russia. Mao has lived in Rockville for more than twenty-five years.
