彭查理是一位超现实主义的冥想画家。他通过古代文字(甲骨文)进行冥想创作,经他之手,这些文字实现了解构、变形、写意和梦幻的融合。查理使古文字变成了一种象征,使古文字与现实对接起来,从而形成了一片五彩缤纷的世界。

彭查理的作品,有着他独创的技法。他运用积色法和双向着色法,使用多层厚重的油彩在宣纸上表现出3D的感观,对视觉极具冲击力和引发冥想。厚重的油彩,多层次的质感,这样的机理是力量型透视的表现主义在宣纸绘画上的一种创新。

彭查理还是一位甲骨文书法家和甲骨文字画家,让文字、书、画、色彩融为一体。

彭查理少时受李苦禅、黄永玉、李可染绘画影响,后随岳母新凤霞习齐派(齐白石)笔法,又随岳父吴祖光习书法。到美国后受劳森博(Robert Rauschenberg)的指点 ,以及受波洛克、康定斯基等人的绘画影响。


Charlie Peng is a renowned Pictography Painter, creator of the Oracle bone script pictography painting style, President of the International Pictography Painting Association, and board member of the Pacific International Fund.


Born to a Chinese revolutionary cadre family, his father once served as the Secretary General of the Central Committee of the General Political Department of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Military Commission. At the beginning of the 1940's, his father was one of the four major antique collectors in the inner circle of CCP. When Charlie was eight years old, his father arranged to have an old man to teach Charlie calligraphy and poetry, a man who was a Mandarin candidate for the Imperial Court of the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911), having been successful in the highest imperial examinations for court officials.


Charlie’s father had in his ancient cultural relic collection a copy of the Chunhua Ge Tie from the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279), a collection of calligraphy masterworks from previous dynasties. Charlie became familiar with the Chunhua Ge Tie as a child and learned the tools of the trade of all Chinese famous calligraphy masters. Since childhood, Charlie is a frequent visitor of renowned modern time Chinese painting masters such as Li Kuchan, Huang Zhou, Xu Linlu, Huang Yongyu, etc. He not only often observed and emulated those famous elder experts creating their masterworks but also received their insightful directions and thoughts. Charlie also followed his eldest brother Peng Ning (currently a famous Chinese movie director) who is in the friend circle of many younger painters and calligraphers such as Wu Xiao-chang, Fan Zeng, Yuan Yun-sheng, Chen Yifei, Li Yan, and others and participated in the discussion of these now famous experts about the calligraphy and painting.


Since young, Charlie’s frequent travels through China have helped him not only see but also feel the art of China. He studied the famous expert Li Si's seal script, Zhang Qian the official script, the inscription carved on a cliff face Magistrate, the Cai Yong hollow-stroke in Chinese calligraphy, Han Lishu and many others.


In 1978, Charlie entered the English Department at the Beijing Foreign Studies University. At the beginning of 1982, he came abroad to study business administration in the U.S. During that time, Charlie took electives in the subjects of photography, oil painting art theory, and play production. For two years, he took time on weekends to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This is the place where he learned to appreciate early time European oil paintings. He also visited the Museum of Modern Art and many other museums and galleries as well.


In 1985, he joined a US petroleum company and pursued business interests for the next ten years before settling down in Oklahoma. During that time, he also made stint as a producer for a Chinese television station and director of a TV series.


For ten years from 1986 to 1997, Charlie took serious Chinese painting and calligraphy lessons from famous teachers. Charlie studied all the famous calligraphy masterworks from Qin Dynasty (221 – 206 BC) to Qing Dynasty. And he was strongly influenced by the famous Chinese traditional painting Master Qi Baishi, as he studied the Qi's inscription on stone tablet and bronze seal cutting technique with emphasis on color. Besides the writing technique and the color thorough study, Charlie also has a strong interest in the contemporary Chinese calligraphy masterworks as well, which include works of calligraphers Qi Gong, Liu Bingsen, and Shen Peng.


Over the years while pursuing business interests, Charlie never gave up his love for art.  In recent years, he again picked up the pen and brush to study and practice the calligraphy inscription on bronze or the inscription on Oracle bones or tortoise shells. He deeply felt the Qi Baishi's essence of inscription on stone tablet and bronze inscribing technique, and then focused on studying the inscriptions on Oralce bones and tortoise shells three thousand to five thousand years ago, and took inspiration from the rock paintings five thousand to 10,000 years ago. At the same time, he was also influenced by the Maya civilization period, which is the cradle of American Indian culture.  Altogether, Charlie combines the ancient pictographic elements of several thousand years long Chinese history with the color variegated western oil painting techniques as well as the elegant Indian Masuria civilization. He united many kinds of elements, emulating a movie montage of consciousness, to create a unique style of modern pictographic painting.


This is one of kind style of brand-new oil painting combined with calligraphy drawing. It has entrusted brand-new artistic vitality to ancient Chinese glyphs. 


University of Oklahoma has set up a special curriculum for the study of calligraphy and painting of inscription glyphs on Oracle bones and tortoise shells, taught by Charlie.
